/ARCHIVING

In our reading habits we tend to use certain methods to mark pages we consider relevant.

The cultural gesture of folding the corner of a page allowed for a poetic way of visualizing information you can take with you.

//VISUALIZING TIME

As a newspaper begins to show its age, it fades to a shade of yellow. Its a natural process that depicts the decay of the material.

Using this visual cue, the newspaper informs the user that an article is expiring and that there is an update available.

A vigorous shake is the action necessary to reveal the new story.

//GEOGRAPHICAL RELATIONSHIPS
How do we use gesture to travel from local to global?

Inspired by Albert Einstein’s Relativity Theory of bending space and time. The overarching concept for this theory is that you do not travel to the destination; you bring the destination close to you.

This idea is applied in two different gestures. By bending the paper inwards the user navigates to local news that are spatially closer to him/her. Bending the device outwards arranges the content to display information that is further away from the reader, and therefore broader and more internationally based.

///ADDING A NEW DIMENSION
As inspiration for thinking of a 3 dimensional environment, I looked at 15 century optical illusions, such as the Anamorphosis.

In order to enhance the information on a 2 dimensional chart, one has to position the paper at a 90º angle in order to reveal a 3 dimensional form with an added layer of information.

Version 2.0 - Beyond the Fold

Scenario_01

This version expands upon the design philosophy of version 1.0.

“Beyond the Fold” not only looks at gesture but how the content behaves.

It introduces new ideas and new gestures that address the newspaper as a medium and its diverse types of content.

How does it work?

/TRANSFERRING INFORMATION

The process of reading a printed newspaper is very tactile and messy. At the end of this process you take not only the knowledge that you read but also part of the physical object in the form of ink that is left in your fingers.

This idea is used as a metaphor to illustrate the exchange of information that happens between the user and the electronic newspaper.
